Poker- understand the game

May 31st, 2009 -- Posted in Online Poker | No Comments »

Generally poker is played with a standard card deck of 52 cards. A card deck consists of 13 various cards as follows:

-Ace

-King

-Queen

-Jacks

-10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

The cards come in four different groups as follows:

-Clubs

-Diamonds

-Hearts

-Spades.

The different groups have different colors and designs to distinguish them from each other. For example, the “hearts” group is red in color and has heart symbols on them. The diamond group has diamonds on them and so on and so forth. It is thus easy to identify a card group by its color and symbol.

     Poker: an overview

Usually poker is played with two or more players. Players posses’ semi hidden or fully hidden cards. The players make wages into the “pool” and the player with the best mixture of cards wins the game and is awarded the cash prize. It seems quite simple but actually involves mind games and tactics to become a pro at the game.

As the game continues in rhythm, the flow usually tends to be clockwise. There are various rounds where the cards are shuffled and reshuffled and distributed to the players. The number of times this happens depends on the type of poker being played, as there are many different types of poker having different types of rules. Before the game begins, players agree upon the variations to be played.

Before the players receive their cards they are supposed to make their bets. The game dose not end until all of the players have placed equal bets in the pool. When it is a player’s turn he/she can do one of the following things:

Check

Bet

Fold

Call

Raise

    - A call is when a player places a bet in the absence of any bets.

    - A check is when in the absence of any bets a player chooses to pass on to the new player, without placing any bet.

    - A raise is when a player places a bet when there are none on the table, and if there is already an existing bet,  the player raises it by making it higher.

    - A folding is when a player gives up his cards deciding not to compete with the existing bet. When a player decides to “fold” he/she looses any chance of winning the game.
